Movement and engagement

Since I'm not clear:

On my turn, I'm engaged with a baddie of some sort; this baddie only has a few hit points left.  I take my standard action to attack, killing the baddie - I'm now unengaged.  Assuming another enemy is nearby, can I take my move action and become engaged with them, or can I only become engaged with them if one of us makes a melee attack against the other?

  • If you are unengaged, you can become engaged with any Nearby foe by using your move action to move up to them.  In your scenario, once you've killed the enemy who had been engaging you, you're free to move wherever you like.  Being engaged just means you're able to make melee attacks at each other; it doesn't require that you do so in order to become engaged.
  • Awesome, thank you!
